ABOUT THE CREATOR

     Taryn Zickefoose is currently a 6-8th grade band director at Marysville Middle School (MMS) in Marysville, Washington. She is a graduate of Central Washington University where she completed her degree in Percussion Performance and Broad Area Music Education in 2015. At Central, Taryn played drums for Jazz Band 1 under the direction of Chris Bruya and Vocal Jazz 1 under the direction of Vijah Singh.  Before CWU, she attended Mount Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon and completed her associates in General Studies with Music Emphasis. At Mount Hood, she had the opportunity to study with Dave Barduhn, Gary Hobbs, Todd Straight, and Jeff Hamilton.
     After finishing at CWU, Taryn taught a year of choir and orchestra in the Edmonds School district in Edmonds, Washington. She began teaching at MMS in the fall of 2016.
     Outside of teaching, Taryn has been asked to play with the Seattle Women’s Jazz Orchestra, The Jim Cutler Jazz Orchestra, the vocal jazz ensemble “Last Call” , the vocal jazz ensemble “Groove for Thought”, Earshot Jazz Festival with Matt Wilson, and other local performances. She performs monthly in an all-teacher jazz band called "Jazz Conspiracy" and helps host an all-ages monthly Jazz Jam in Marysville. She has been a clinician for State Percussion contests, the Edmonds Jazz Symposium, CWU’s Women’s Day in Jazz, Edmonds Summer Camp, North End Jazz Camp, Edmonds All-Girls Band, and SWOJO’s All-Girls Jazz Band.
In 2018, Taryn organized an All-Girls Jazz Band in her region that is open to 6-12th graders. This program provides mentorship to young female players and helps them meet other musicians across the Mount Pilchuck Region. Taryn is currently serving as the secretary for the MPMEA region and runs a private studio out of her home.
